COLOR OF CHANGE REACTS TO SENATE VOTE APPROVING RECONCILIATION BILL THAT INCLUDES DEEPER CUTS TO SAFETY NET PROGRAMS ESSENTIAL TO BLACK FAMILIES

NATIONAL After a 24-hour vote-a-rama, the Senate passed Trump’s budget reconciliation in a vote 51-50. The Senate’s version of the bill includes deeper cuts to vital services essential for Black families and adds $3.3T to the national debt in order to pay for the largest ever tax cut for billionaires and corporations. The bill now moves back to the House of Representatives for another vote.

Portia Allen-Kyle, Interim Executive Director of Color Of Change, issued the following statement:

“This bill is an attack on Black people–plain and simple. It rips health care away from millions, hikes up our utility bills, kills jobs, and punishes anyone trying to get a college degree. It targets the very things our families need to survive and get ahead. If it passes in the House, more of us will be homeless, including the elderly being kicked out of shuttered nursing homes; more of us will be broke, as it takes away affordable student loan repayment options; more of us will be hungry as it rips food away from children and families; and more of us will be sick as hospitals close across the country. Black families deserve the opportunity to thrive, but this bill locks many families out of building a better future for the generation to come.
