Color Of Change Responds to BodyCam Footage of Cop City Protester Shooting

NATIONWIDE – In response to the latest release of body camera footage of the shooting of a Cop City protester by the Atlanta Police Department, Jade Magnus Ogunnaike, Vice President of Corporate Power at Color Of Change, issued the following statement:

“The footage released by the Atlanta Police Department yesterday – which captured a portion of the altercation that led to protester Manuel ‘Tortuguita’ Paez Terán’s murder – was a stark reminder of the dangers of an increasingly militarized police force who violently interact with Black communities, and the allies who advocate alongside us.

How many more videos must we see before it is clear that heightened police presence does not lead to our safety – but rather throttles excessive force used against Black and brown residents? In a critical time of need for the city of Atlanta, corporations such as Well Fargo, Target, and Truist have made it abundantly clear what their priorities are by abandoning the community and lining up to fund the construction of Cop City. Color Of Change will continue to mobilize its millions of members to maintain pressure on these companies until they meet the demands laid out by Atlanta’s Black residents and the South River/Weelaunee activists.”
