COLOR OF CHANGE REACTS TO THE CENSURE AGAINST REPRESENTATIVE  AL GREEN

NATIONAL – During Donald Trump’s Congressional speech this week, Representative Al Green was removed from the House floor for protesting the President’s proposed cuts to Medicaid. In response, House Leadership introduced a censure resolution and censured Representative Green.

Portia Allen-Kyle, Interim Executive Director of Color Of Change issued the following statement:

“When injustice occurs, silence is an accomplice to the harm inflicted against our communities. In moments of crisis, the public looks to elected officials who will stand up, speak out, and fight for us. Congressman Al Green spoke truth to power when others were unwilling, demonstrating the kind of necessary leadership people across the country are dying to see. Instead of being condemned, his actions should be celebrated as a reminder that we have the power to speak out and organize against injustice, and seen as a call to action to Congress to act and not perform.”

Color Of Change disavows the votes of Representatives Bera, Case, Gillen, Costa, Himes, Houlahan, Kaptur, Moskowitz, Perez, and Suozzi for the censure resolution. We encourage all members of Congress to follow the example of Al Green – instead of silencing the voices of those who speak up against injustice, they should defend the needs of their constituents and stop the budget cuts that threaten to destroy Black communities.
