In light of the recent opinion by the FTC regarding Intuit’s deceptive marketing practices with their Turbo Tax product, Rashad Robinson, the President of Color Of Change, issued the following  statement:

“Intuit’s program, the TurboTax Free Edition, deliberately misleads customers by hiding the actual cost, while advancing false claims about the services. The decision by the Federal Trade Commission to hold parent company Intuit accountable for saying a product is free that is not actually free — sends a strong message to others willing to use false claims to deceive consumers, often Black, brown and poor, out of their hard earned paychecks. Inuit misled customers by steering them towards paid services when they were eligible for free filing.

Make no mistake, companies like Intuit steal from our communities because they believe they can. This type of accountability, following a thorough investigation, is critical to stopping the predatory third-party activities that are all too common in the tax preparation industry. We urge the media to examine Intuit’s current lobbying against IRS Direct Free File in light of the decision by the FTC and we hope all eligible taxpayers will take advantage of free tax services instead of predatory tax companies.”
